During a recent University Council meeting at Tishk International University (TIU), Assist. Prof. Dr. Abubakar M. Ashir presented an innovative project proposal titled, Project AIRON (Artificial Intelligence and Robotics Ontology). This initiative, in collaboration with the IT Department, aims to establish TIU as a leading research institution in the fields of artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics.
Project AIRON is designed to develop a humanoid AI robot and integrate advanced AI capabilities tailored to empower Kurdish-speaking communities. The project is structured into three core units, each with a specific focus:
- AIRON Lab: A dedicated laboratory for research and development.
- AIRON Hub: A center for collaboration and innovation.
- AIRON Sorani: A unit focused on developing AI capabilities for the Kurdish language.
The presentation by Dr. Ashir and his team, Dr. Taha Baheer Taha and Mr. Holan, was well-received by the University Council and President, Professor Sultan T. Abu-Orabi, who praised their forward-thinking proposal and commitment to academic excellence. The council members were highly engaged and expressed keen interest in supporting the project.

In addition to the successful presentation, Dr. Ashir received an appreciation letter from the President. This recognition celebrated his exceptional mentorship of Mr. Holan, whose graduation project was honored as the “Best Project” at the 25th Innovative Student Forum. The forum, organized by the Arab Committee for Student Training and Innovation, featured projects from 50 students across 20 universities in 7 countries.
This event highlights TIU’s collaborative spirit and intellectual rigor. Project AIRON holds immense potential to elevate the university’s stature in AI and robotics while contributing meaningfully to the technological landscape of the Kurdish region.
