The Department of Computer Engineering has organized a workshop entitled “The Effects Of Class Advisers In Improving Students’ Learning Outcomes And Integration In Tishk International University’s Life” on December 8th, 2020.

The workshop was presented by Asst. Lecturer Muhammed Anwar, Computer Engineering, TIU, Asst. Lecturer Mohammed Abdulghani, Computer Engineering, TIU, Dr Muhammed Ali Namuq, Petroleum and Mining Engineering, TIU, Asst. Lecturer Rozh Ismael Abdulmajed, Survey Engineering, TIU.

Students are the most valuable assets in the university. Due to the increasing number of private universities in recent years, there is a competition to gain more students. Universities must take care of their students which can be done via class advisors in each department.

However the student advisory is not active nowadays, so one of the objectives of the workshop is to activate class advisory. The workshop gathered all the class advisors to collect the information regarding the satisfaction of students in the university.

The first session started with a brief introduction to the academic advisory.

The second session consisted of simultaneous presentations, where the following topics were discussed

  1. Providing academic and social support. Students require someone to listen to them
  2. It’s crucial to give the students a chance to speak up about their problems by providing them with a suitable environment.
  3. Create a link between students and the advisor found to be important and has a great impact on creating trust between both sides.
  4. Most of the time, advisors find it hard to follow up with all the student related cases due to time and other academic responsibilities.
  5.  Experience/impressions from meeting the students as a class advisor.
  6. Preparations for the freshman year students.
  7. Preparations for the senior year students, focusing on their graduation projects.
  8. Recommendation for improving the class advisory at TIU.

The workshop was concluded by a set of suggestions to help lay a roadmap for smooth communication between advisor and student.

  1. Advise the students to follow the project timeline and due dates.
  2. Arrange a workshop with the help of the dean of students to advise students who would like to study Master’s degree after they finish their bachelor’s degree
  3. Advise the students about their career by providing help from TIU’s career centre.
