The Department of Computer Engineering at Tishk International University (TIU) organized an orientation program for its newly enrolled first-grade students on December 8, 2024. The program, led by the Head of Department, Mr. Mousa M Amin, aimed to introduce students to the university and department.
The orientation began with a welcoming speech from Mr. Amin, who provided an overview of the department’s history, mission, and vision, as well as its facilities and activities. He also highlighted the recent international accreditation awarded to the department and the wide range of job opportunities available to computer engineering graduates. The curriculum, university rules, academic advising, and GPA calculation were also thoroughly explained.
Program Sessions and Topics
This year’s orientation program was held in multiple sessions to cover all relevant topics related to the department and campus life.
First Session Topics:
- Welcoming speech by the Head of Departments
- A brief introduction to the faculty’s history
- Job opportunities for graduates
- The academic calendar for 2024-2025
- An introduction to the SIS System
- Course registration and the add/drop process
- How to access lecture notes and the e-learning system
- The curriculum table and credit concepts
- The importance of Foundation English courses
- An overview of the benefits of accreditation
- An introduction to Dean of Students units, including clubs, the Students Council, and the Career Center
- A brief introduction to the TIU Library and other student services (IT, Accounting, Cafeteria, Sports Facilities)
- Guidance on setting clear goals and thinking realistically to overcome challenges
The program concluded with a tour of the department and main building facilities, including lecture halls, the library, and laboratories, guided by second and third-grade students.
Second Session Topics:
The second session, planned for the first day of classes, will be led by the first-grade advisor, Mr. Mahmood Yashar. The topics for this session include:
- Introduction to the “Student Handbook”
- Attendance policy and exam rules
- Disciplinary action
- Summer school and makeup exams
- How to calculate your GPA
- Office hours and academic advising procedures
- Information on petition letters and medical reports
- The Student Feedback Survey
