Scientific Trip to Shaqlawa Province

On Wednesday, 8th of May, 2023, the Department of Petroleum and Mining Engineering, Faculty of Engineering at Tishk International University organized a scientific trip for the department’s sophomore-year students to Shaqlawa Area. The geological trip aimed to expose students to the petroleum system elements and how the system works efficiently. Students were familiarized with oil seeps, measuring dip and strike, and different rock types and stratigraphic units, aiming of creating a good starting ground for the student’s potential to launch a career in the petroleum industry environment.

Dr. Rzger Abdulkarim Abdula and Miss Shnyar Hussein, Instructor of Petroleum Geology Course, welcomed the students and gave a brief geological history of the area, introducing students to stratigraphic units, and showing students the oil seepage, which indicates the inefficiency of cap rock. Later on, the students were introduced to traditional coal making. The team leader of the coal maker explained the processes of making the coal and how this process is isolated from oxygen by covering the grill area in order to set a semi-closed system.

The visit, which came together as part of the departmental annual activity plan, was concluded with a question and answers session led by Dr. Rzger Abdulkarim Abdula, whereby the students were given the chance to ask their questions regarding the petroleum system elements along with detailed questions regarding the petroleum system processes.

The Department of Petroleum and Mining Engineering would like to extend its gratitude and appreciation to the staff for their efforts and contributions to this field trip.
