PAME Social Community Project: Hiwa Institution of Deaf and Mute

In cooperation with the ZeroWaste team, the Department of Petroleum and Mining Engineering (PAME)Faculty of Engineering at Tishk International University (TIU) organized a visit to Hiwa Institution for the Deaf and Mute on April 4th, 2022. The visit was the continuation of last year’s social community project and our one-year partnership with the institute.

Hiwa Institution strives to educate its students, provide an equal opportunity to learn, and preserve their right to learn. ZeroWaste is a non-governmental project founded and coordinated by our 4th-grade students (Evin Ghazi Harris & Fatah Mohammed Fatah). It aims to reduce waste material, improve recycling, and protect our land’s beautiful nature.

A committee consisting of staff members, Research Assistants in PAME, Mr Omer Azad Khorsheed and Mr Ibrahim Fatih Rasul, 3rd-grade PAME students Safa Marwan Abdulrahman, Sumaya Jamal Jalal and Marwa Tariq Musa paid a visit to the institute. 

The purpose of the visit was to conduct a seminar previously planned in coordination with our department’s partners (ZeroWaste and Deaf Hiwa Institute) for the students about protecting the environment. The ZeroWaste team presented the seminar. The visit also aimed to allow the project coordinators to meet with the principal Mrs Nazanin to discuss and arrange the possible activities in collaboration with their institute to serve the students. Various activities were suggested and chosen according to the benefit and requirements for students.

On April 21st, the Department of Petroleum and Mining arranged a long-term wall painting activity for Hiwa Institution of the Deaf and Mute. The visit was organized in coordination with the Art Club at TIU, supervised by Ms Yosra Wrya Pirbal and 3rd-grade students Sumaya Jamal Jalal and Marwa Tariq Musa.

The activity is ongoing and continuous and aims to add colours and design to the room in Hiwa Institution to promote joy and happiness while spreading awareness about protecting the environment. Each drawing depicts a specific message or represents a story of that particular time.

On May 16th, 2022, Tishk International University (TIU) / Faculty of Engineering, Department of Petroleum and Mining Engineering (PAME), hosted two seminars for Hiwa Institution of the Deaf and Mute students. More than 60 students with the institute staff participated in the project managed by Mr Omar Azad Khorsheed, Mr Ibrahim Fatih Rasul, Ms Esra Sami Baqer, and Ms Shnyar Hussen Ahmed.

In the morning, TIU buses accompanied the students and staff of Hiwa Institute to the TIU Campus, where the seminar took place.

  • The first seminar was hosted for the boys entitled “Disadvantages of Smoking and its Harmful Effects on Health”, presented by Mr Mohammed Fatih, RasulAssistant Lecturer at the Medical Analysis department at TIU, and interpreted to the students by Hiwa Institutions Staff.
  • The second seminar was hosted for the girls with the help of the English Language Teaching (ELT) Department, Dr Venera Ulker (Head of Department) and Mr Adem Daskan under the title “Cybersecurity and How to Safely Use Social Media Platforms”. The seminar was presented by Aya Ali Hussein, a 2nd-grade student at the English Language Teaching (ELT) Department at TIU and interpreted to the students by Hiwa Institutions Staff.

At the end of the seminar, the students participated by asking questions and giving feedback to the presenters. After the seminar, the students were taken on a university campus tour. They were shown around by the students Zahraa Muhammed Fayk, Mahmood Mohammed Abd and Halo Rzgar Mohammed. Later in the afternoon, staff and students enjoyed lunch together in the TIU cafeteria.

Concluding the event, our department provided the staff and students with stationery gift packages, including notebooks, pencil cases, pens, and pencils. 

To preserve the memory of this great project, students and staff of TIU and Hiwa Institute took a group photo together and boarded the buses to go back to Hiwa Institute.
