Abstract:  Poetry is one of the out-of-class activities of the teaching staff. The link between engineering and poetry lies in the fact that both have an element of design. Composing poetry requires constructional skills, linking words into verses and poems. This process requires basic design skills, imaginary expressions, and coherence knowledge which all lead to ending up with a sound piece of product (in this case: A POEM).

  • The environmental surroundings, as in the engineering design, are regarded as boundary conditions enabling the standard and artistic impressions of any composed poem.
  • This poetry reading session involves several personal artistic impressions composed by Professor, Dr. Hamed M. Jassim during different eras of his life. The best poem is that which tells a story or represents a possibility of a release of inner pressure on certain sentimental occasions during which you throw away and forget all about sophisticated things like Laplace Transforms, Terzaghi Equations, and Differential Equations and just hold a pencil and a piece of paper on which you try and release your inner pressure. He aims to prove that poetry and poem writing is not monopolized by human and art scientists. He wants to say that Engineers can also weave words into verses and, eventually, verses into possible poems.

Short Biography: After completing secondary school in Bagdad, Dr. Hamed was awarded a scholarship to study in England, whereby he completed the following study programs:

GCE. A-Level (General Certificate of Education) from Dudley Technical College in Dudley-England 1972-1973.

B.Sc. from Leeds University-England in Mining Engineering 1973-1976

M.Sc. from Leeds University-England in Applied Geophysics 1976-1977

He Joined Baghdad Univ. / College of Eng. / Petroleum & Mining Eng. Dept. in February 1980.

In 1985, he obtained an Austrian Scholarship to study Ph.D. at Leoben School of Mines (Montanuniversitaet Leoben)-Austria in Mining Eng. (Specialty Tunneling Eng.) 1985-1990.

He worked as a lecturer and assistant dean at the College of Eng. / Baghdad Univ. , Assistant Dean and then Dean at  Alkhawarizmi Engineering College. He was promoted to Assistant Professor in 2005. In 2006, Dr. Hamed transferred his work to Koya University / Faculty of Eng. / Geotechnical Eng. Dept, until September 2016 when he was appointed as Head of the School of Petroleum & Chemical Eng. from 2010-to 2013. He was promoted to Professor on April 4th, 2015.
