On Tuesday, February 4, 2025, the Petroleum and Mining Engineering Department at Tishk International University (TIU) successfully organized a seminar on “Well Control in Drilling Operations.” The session was presented by Mohammed Ariwan Jamal and aimed to provide students and faculty with a deeper understanding of well control systems and their critical role in drilling.

Understanding Well Control Systems

During the seminar, Mr. Jamal highlighted the function of well control systems in detecting, preventing, and managing kicks in drilling operations. He explained the significance of primary and secondary well control methods to ensure safety and efficiency. Attendees also learned about key indicators of a well kick, such as changes in pit volume and flow rate.

The seminar also covered the role of Blowout Preventers (BOPs), including annular and ram-type preventers, in mitigating risks associated with uncontrolled fluid influx. The importance of choke and kill lines in controlling well pressure and preventing blowouts was also discussed.

This session provided valuable insights into modern well control techniques, safety measures, and industry best practices. It helped students and faculty gain a better understanding of real-world challenges and the need for continuous monitoring and effective response strategies.
