On 9 December 2025, the Petroleum and Mining Engineering Department (PAME) at Tishk International University (TIU) held one of its departmental seminars, presented by the Head of the Department, Prof. Dr. Fadhil Ali. The seminar was attended by academic staff members of the Petroleum and Mining Engineering Department, as well as lecturers and professors from other departments within the university.
The seminar addressed an important and insightful topic, providing a comprehensive overview of geophysics and its fundamental relationship with geology. Prof. Dr. Fadhil Ali emphasized how the physical properties of the Earth are measured, analyzed, and interpreted to support subsurface investigations, particularly in the context of natural resource exploration.
During the seminar, key geophysical methods were introduced alongside the physical principles on which they are based. Geological exploration through geophysical fieldwork was clearly defined, with discussion focused on its objectives and real-world applications. Special attention was given to three major geophysical techniques widely used in oil and gas exploration: gravity, magnetic, and seismic methods. For each technique, a concise theoretical background was presented, followed by illustrative examples demonstrating their value in exploration studies. The seminar also covered data acquisition procedures, including typical field practices and examples of commonly used equipment for each method. In addition, essential approaches for data processing, interpretation, and visual presentation were outlined, supported by representative figures showing standard exploration outputs.
The seminar was highly beneficial and well received by attendees, contributing to enhanced understanding of geophysical applications in petroleum and mining engineering and encouraging interdisciplinary academic discussion.
