We are pleased to announce that the Petroleum and Mining Engineering Department at Tishk International University (TIU), in collaboration with the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Northern Iraq Section, will be hosting an International Workshop as part of the SPE Distinguished Lecture Program for the 2024-25 season. This prestigious event will take place on Sunday, September 8, 2024, at 10:00 AM in Campus Hall 302.
Workshop Topic: New Frontiers in Intelligent Completions
The workshop will be delivered by Dr. Muhammad Arsalan, a renowned expert from Saudi Aramco, who will provide insights into the latest advancements in intelligent completions technology, particularly focused on improving well productivity and reservoir management through the revolutionary Thru-tubing Retrievable Intelligent Completion System (TRICS).
Abstract
Managing uncertainties in reservoirs, particularly in carbonate formations, remains a critical challenge. Intelligent completions allow for real-time monitoring and control of specific zones within wells. Without these advanced completions, mechanical intervention may be required when a zone unexpectedly waters out, leading to operational downtime and higher costs. Currently, most intelligent completions are designed for newly drilled or cased-hole wells, but there is a pressing need to convert existing open-hole horizontal wells into smart wells economically.
Dr. Arsalan’s presentation will introduce TRICS, a rig-less, retrievable intelligent completion system designed to address the common issues of gas and water breakthroughs in aging open-hole wells. This system is a game-changer in production engineering and reservoir management, offering real-time monitoring and control solutions for enhanced recovery and operational efficiency.
Biography of Dr. Muhammad Arsalan
Dr. Muhammad Arsalan is a highly accomplished professional with over 25 years of experience across multiple industries, including energy, space, semiconductors, and biomedical sectors. His contributions in the field of intelligent completions have earned him numerous international accolades, including the 2022 SPE Completions Award for the MENA region. Dr. Arsalan leads a team at Saudi Aramco’s Advanced Research Center, focusing on cutting-edge technologies for surface and subsurface production monitoring, control, and optimization. With over 100 international patents and publications, Dr. Arsalan is a key innovator in advanced sensing, multiphase metering, and robotics.
