A Field Trip to Qarachuq Cement Plant – Kar Group

On Sunday 7th May 2023, the Department of Petroleum & Mining Engineering, Faculty of Engineering at Tishk International University organized a field trip to Qarachuq Cement Plant, owned by KAR Group. A group of thirty 3rd and 4th grade students participated in the trip, including students with relating topics in their graduation projects. Professor, Dr. Hamed M. Jassim also accompanied the students in this trip.

The objectives of the trip included:

1- To show the students the quarry which provides the raw materials which are necessary for cement production and explain the methods of material excavation and properties.

2- To show the students how the raw materials are transported from the quarry to the cement plant facilities.

3- To show the students the different stages of cement production in a cycle from quarry to transportation to crushing and heat treatment to lab testing ending up with packaging.

The programme of the trip, which is connected to the Mining Engineering PTR-324 subject of the department’s curriculum, included a visit to the quarry of the raw materials for cement production, whereby the geologists and engineers gave full description of the raw materials excavation and transport by conveyor belts to the plant. The students, later paid visit to the different sections and departments of the cement plant including plant prototype, the testing laboratories, the central control room of the plant and the filling and packaging unit, whereby the engineers gave a detailed overview and explanation of each activity. The trip was finally concluded with a big hospitality in the plat engineers restaurant, whereby a nice lunch was provided.
