On 17 February 2025, the Petroleum and Mining Engineering Department at Tishk International University conducted one of its internal seminars as part of the department’s internal seminar series. Assistant Prof. Ziyad Jamil Talabany delivered the seminar, which focused on gas sweetening and its importance in natural gas processing.
This internal seminar at TIU addressed the growing role of natural gas as a major source of industrial and domestic energy. The speaker explained that raw natural gas requires several treatment processes before it reaches consumers. In particular, these processes ensure that the gas meets safety, environmental, and operational standards.
Assistant Prof. Talabany emphasized the importance of removing contaminants from the gas stream. If operators leave these contaminants untreated, they can cause freezing, corrosion, erosion, and pipeline plugging. Moreover, untreated gases may create environmental, health, and safety risks. Therefore, proper gas treatment remains essential in modern petroleum operations.
The seminar also discussed the removal of acid gases such as hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide. These components reduce gas quality and may damage processing facilities. As a result, gas sweetening becomes a necessary step between the wellhead and the end consumer.
Throughout the seminar, participants engaged in technical discussion and exchanged academic perspectives on gas treatment technologies. In addition, the session strengthened understanding of how theoretical concepts in petroleum engineering directly relate to industrial gas processing systems.
Through this internal seminar at TIU, the department reaffirmed its commitment to continuous academic development and technical knowledge exchange among faculty members.
