On February 27, 2025, the Drilling Fluid Competition was successfully held at Tishk International University (TIU). The event was a collaborative effort by the TIU Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Student Chapter, the SPE Northern Iraq Section, and Pulsar Petroleum Company. The competition brought together participants and guests from various universities across the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, including Soran University, Koya University, Sulaymaniyah Polytechnic University (SPU), and the American University of Iraq, Sulaimani (AUIS).

A Day of Technical and Practical Challenges

The event began with a welcome speech from Dr. Fadhil Ali, Head of the Petroleum and Mining Engineering Department, followed by an introduction from Mr. Zakariya Niyaz, the President of the TIU SPE Student Chapter. Attendees then participated in a key technical lecture by Mr. Arya Fallah of Pulsar Petroleum, which provided valuable insights into drilling fluids and their applications.

Following the lecture, the competition proceeded in two stages:

  • A theoretical exam: This assessed participants’ knowledge of drilling fluid concepts, calculations, and industry-related topics.
  • A practical challenge: Held in the Drilling Fluid Laboratory at TIU, this hands-on test required students to prepare and adjust the density of a water-based drilling fluid in a team-based, timed challenge.

Fostering Industry Connections

The competition was a great opportunity for students to enhance their technical knowledge, teamwork, and communication skills. It fostered a vital connection between academia and industry, giving students valuable experience with real-world drilling fluid applications. The event also provided a platform for students from different universities to network and collaborate.

The event was organized by Mr. Mohammed Ariwan and Mr. Omar Azad from the TIU Petroleum and Mining Engineering Department, along with Mr. Arya Fallah from Pulsar Petroleum. The TIU SPE Student Chapter officers, including Mr. Diyare Ahmed (Vice President) and Mr. Zakariya Niyaz (President), also played a vital role in ensuring the competition’s success.
