On December 10th, 2024, the Department of Petroleum and Mining Engineering at Tishk International University (TIU) hosted an internal seminar titled “Earthquakes, Definition, Measurements and Scales,” presented by Prof. Dr. Fadhil Ali.

The seminar delved into the definition of earthquakes, their causes related to energy release along faults at tectonic plate boundaries, and the types of plate boundaries, including convergent, divergent, and transform. Prof. Dr. Fadhil Ali explained how seismographs are used to record seismic activity and elaborated on the two main measurement scales: the Richter Scale for magnitude and the Mercalli Intensity Scale for effects.

This insightful session offered participants a deeper understanding of earthquake mechanisms and measurement techniques, contributing to their academic enrichment.
