An Overview of Reservoir Engineering and Classification of Petroleum Reservoirs with Reference to Phase Diagram

On October 28th, 2022, Mr. Mohammed Ariwan and Mr. Nabaz Ali Abdulrahman, Assistant Lecturers at the Department of Petroleum and Mining EngineeringFaculty of Engineering at Tishk International University, held two seminars titled: An Overview of Reservoir Engineering and Classification of Petroleum Reservoirs with Reference to Phase Diagram.

The first seminar was presented by Mr. Mohammed Ariwan, which included detailed information about petroleum reservoirs, reservoir engineering and the role of reservoir engineers, and petroleum reservoir lifecycle stages, including 1) Exploration and Discovery, 2) Appraisal and Delineation, 3) Development, 4) Production and Maintenance, 5) Abandonment. The seminar also included an introduction to Phase (P-T) Diagram and its related terminologies, definitions, and main types of petroleum reservoirs, which are classified according to the phase diagram.

The second seminar was presented by Mr. Nabaz Ali, which discussed the classification of petroleum reservoirs to (1) Oil and (2) Gas reservoirs, subclassification of the oil reservoirs into: 1) Undersaturated, 2) Saturated, and 3) Gas-cap reservoirs based on initial reservoir pressure. Subclassification into 1) Black oil, 2) Low-shrinkage, 3) High-shrinkage, and 4) Near-critical crude oils. Furthermore, the seminar also covered the classification of gas reservoirs into 1) Retrograde gas-condensate, 2) Near-critical gas condensate, 3) Wet gas, and 4) Dry gad reservoirs based on the phase diagram and prevailing reservoir conditions.
