Civil Engineering Department Visits Crisis Coordination Center

Working towards enhancing earthquake monitoring and disaster management, the Civil Engineering Department, Faculty of Engineering at Tishk International University (TIU), in collaboration with the Chair of Advanced Structures at Bauhaus University of Weimar, has successfully launched the Kurdistan Educational Seismic Observatory (KESO). The initiative aims to establish an earthquake recording centre that will play a pivotal role in collecting accurate seismic data.

A delegation from Tishk International University, consisting of Dr. Barham Haider, Head of the Civil Engineering Department, and Mr. Peshawar Luqman Hassan, a Ph.D. student at Bauhaus University of Weimar, recently visited the Joint Crisis Coordination Center of the Ministry of Interior. Ms. Sarwa Rasul, the Director General of the Joint Crisis Coordination Center, expressed her gratitude for the valuable project carried out by both universities. She emphasized the importance of the initiative in providing the central watch room with precise earthquake data, in coordination with the General Directorate of Meteorology Ministry of Transportation.

During the meeting, Ms. Sarwa Rasul underscored the significance of linking academic endeavours with crisis management centers, identifying it as a crucial priority for the Joint Crisis Coordination Center. The collaboration between TIU’s Civil Engineering Department and Bauhaus University of Weimar exemplifies a successful fusion of academic expertise and practical application in addressing crises and disasters.

Following the discussions, the center’s staff received a brief information about on utilizing the KESO and accessing pertinent data and information. The meeting delved into various issues, highlighting the center’s need for university partnerships in areas such as preventing illegal immigration, fostering community awareness, and encouraging volunteer initiatives.

Dr. Barham Ali, representing TIU’s Civil Engineering Department, expressed the department’s readiness to undertake projects that benefit the community. This collaborative effort reflects the department’s commitment to advancing knowledge and technology for the greater good.
