Tunnel Construction Requirements; Design Requirements; Tunneling Method Selection; Support Requirements; Completion ( Complementary ) Services; Types of Tunnels; Historical development of Tunneling Engineering; List of the longest tunnels which were built in different parts of the world; Geological and Geotechnical Investigation of Tunnel Sites; The aims of the geological and geotechnical investigations for the tunneling projects; The effect of the tunneling on the water table; Steps and Methods of Investigation; Exploratory Borings; Selection of Tunnel Axis; Some of the areas requiring more detailed exploration borings; Nature of Stresses around Tunnels; Primary and Secondary stress Fields; Interaction between Ground and Tunnel Support; Tunnel Design Methods; Empirical methods; Observational methods; Analytical methods; Numerical methods; Terzaghi’s Rock Load Classification; Modifications to Terzaghi’s Rock Load Classification; The major rock classification systems; Application of Bieniawski’s System; Application of Barton’s System ( The Q System); Observational Design Methods; Analytical Design Methods; Numerical Design Methods; NATM ( New Austrian Tunneling Method) Design Approach.
