On Monday, February 15, 2021, TIU- Architectural Design Department organized a scientific trip for second-grade students as a part of the scientific activities that relate to the ‘Free Hand Drawing’ course. Students headed to Erbil Citadel with their supervisors, Dr. Sarkawt, and Research Assistants: Miss Shahd Ahmed and Miss Lava Ahmed.

Students were firstly introduced to the local architecture and the building materials used, and analysed several aspects of the design elements of the citadel. They were also divided into groups to tour the site and experience the local heritage. Then, different buildings and perspectives were chosen by each student to sketch, in order to train their observation skills and gain a better understanding of spaces. This activity enables the students to explore their imagination and enhance their visual representation, shadows, masses. The trip improved the student’s understanding of scales and building materials, which was noticed in the transformations of their drawings.
