Climate change awareness Project
In collaboration with the Dean of Students at Tishk International University and in partnership with ECO-Vital NGO, the Architecture Department implemented a social community project. The project aimed to raise awareness about environmental problems, targeting primary school students. The main goals and objectives include:
- Raise awareness amongst students on climate change and its harmful effects on the environment and human beings.
- Share data on change in this region and provide information to people of all ages on how to save resources, such as water, electricity, oil, time, etc.
- Declare the negative effects of climate change on the next generations.
- Help people redesign their lifestyles and work towards reducing their effects on the environment.
- Exchange ideas on how to stop climate change and global warming with possible solutions for our community.
The project was implemented in two phases:
The first phase included a visit on February 22nd, followed by the next visit on February 24th, 2022
Media committee members distributed flyers in the citadel and public areas, stickers at schools, and published news and video clips on the main and architecture webpage, and other social media accounts like Facebook. Workshop committee members conducted the workshops at TIU and primary schools. Gift preparation committee members prepared the small stationery gifts for the school kids, and exhibition organization committee members organized a sale exhibition of student works to fund the project. Food fundraising committee members prepared the food fundraising event held architecture department.
Research assistants selected two schools in the city, Turaq Primary School and Rashkin Mzafar Primary School, and organized visits to each. Gifts including such as sketchbooks and colored pencils were given to the school students. Posters and PowerPoint presentations were delivered to help the students understand the purpose of the social community project and the effects of climate change on the environment. Illustrations, videos, and other media were used to promote student interaction and interest.
Volunteering architecture students joined their teachers in the visits and participated in the activities with the school students, aiming to raise awareness of environmental problems and global warming amongst the new generations to ensure a safer and healthier future.
Sustainable practices were introduced to the students and several practices may be implemented as part of their daily lives to reduce the effects of climate change and environmental issues:
- Turning off the lights when people aren’t in the room
- Recycling, reusing, and repurposing waste
- Planting trees and vegetation
- Using both sides of the paper
- Saving water and being aware of the water consumption
- Sharing books
- Using bikes instead of cars
Students must be responsible and aware of the actions that contribute to climate change and understand how to change their daily practices, consumption, and waste management to make our planet a better place.
