A site visit to construction site was organized for the 3rd grade civil engineering students on 7th of November 2018. Before anything all safety instructions were given to the student. Then based on the plan all student gathered at the university around 9:30 am and then the site has been reached after 45-minute journey by bus. After arrival to the site and meeting with the people in charge of guiding us, a short brief about the project was given by Mr. Hallo (the contractor senior resident engineer) to start the tour around the site.
The project is located in Knowledge university, Erbil, which was the building of engineering college ( 5 floors plus one levels of basement). After briefing students were guide into the floors and then into the basement, during walking students were able to see different types of materials, such as packets of Portland cement or ducts before instillation for air conditioning purpose, elevator, shear wall, ribbed slab, beams, girder, columns, stairs and pipes.
The main objectives for the site visiting were:
- Experiencing and learning more about construction site environment that will face them after graduation and entering construction industry.
- Understanding about importance of safety and notes that should be taken before entering to a construction site for the accidents that may happen there.
- Learning about basic process of construction by observing a real example of working space, plus observing and comparing topics that taught by lecturers at university.
- More understanding about construction technology of buildings and different methods of constructing, plus exploring and identifying different types of building materials.
- Giving chance to students for learning about different types of machinery and their uses by observing, such as concrete mixer, crane, bar cutting machine, etc.
- Helping students for better understanding of construction drawings and detail.
- Asking questions from supervisors and people working at construction site to gain more information and learn from their experiences.
