National Workshop: Scenography as a new Ideology in Interior Design

The Interior Design DepartmentFaculty of EngineeringTishk International University, organized a national workshop titled “Scenography as a new Ideology in Interior Design“, held on June 7th, 2022. Dr Ibtisam Abdulelah Mohammed presented the workshop. The presenter explained that space is no longer viewed as a purely physical entity, a container with fixed boundaries, or a volume that may be empty, neutral even, or objects, furnished with a purpose and thus be given functionality and meaning. Instead, we have learned, and maybe always felt, that space is not one but many. It may be imaginary, fleeting, and ephemeral. It may be solid, static, and consistent. We know that by our sheer presence, we are active participants within the space surrounding us and always influence or change that space’s spatial parameters and characteristics.

The term “Scenography” includes all of the elements that contribute to establishing an atmosphere and mood for a theatrical presentation: lighting, sound, set, and costume design Scenography is a tool, enabling us to give form and create space for the imagination, not in a given and fixed space, but through the shift from real space to imaginary space and back.

This workshop aimed to explain Scenography as the integration of “space, text, research, art, actors, directors and spectators which contributes to an original creation. The workshop was attended by many faculty lecturers and research assistants; they gained much valuable theoretical information by visually discussing the difference between scenography and cinematography in space visualizations.
