9th ICOWOBAS -2023 (Planet Earth and Contemporary Environmental Issues)

As part of the panel discussions and workshops held during the 9th ICOWOBAS Conference, held on May 8th to May 11th, 2023, a comprehensive focus was placed on addressing numerous pressing environmental issues that have emerged as a result of significant global developments over the past two centuries.

These issues encompass a wide range of challenges, including but not limited to global warming, water eutrophication, drought, land degradation, desertification, air pollution, population growth, genetically engineered food products, water scarcity, erratic rainfall patterns, environmental degradation, and the occurrence of natural disasters such as earthquakes and tsunamis. The severity of these challenges cannot be underestimated, as they pose a substantial threat to the availability of resources for our continuously expanding global population. Furthermore, the utilization of technology has led to unintended consequences and catastrophic events in our efforts to meet the escalating demands for space and resources.

The workshop aimed to achieve the following outcomes:

  1. To increase awareness among the audience regarding the pressing environmental issues that our planet is currently confronting.
  2. To examine the adverse effects of technology on the sustainability of planet Earth.
  3. To shed light on the expectations and implications of phenomena such as sandstorms and earthquakes.
  4. To present viable solutions for adhering to design and construction codes that promote the development of sustainable buildings.
  5. To explore the practical applications of remote sensing and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in addressing challenges related to drought and land degradation in Iraq and the surrounding region.

By addressing these outcomes, the workshop aimed to contribute to the collective understanding and effective mitigation of the environmental challenges faced by our planet.
