Solar World Congress and Review of the Progress of Research on Solar Updraft Tower in Erbil

On November 30th, 2023, the Aviation Engineering Department, Faculty of Engineering at Tishk International University (TIU) organized a workshop on the Development of the Investigation of Solar Updraft Tower in the City of Erbil to the North of Iraq.

The first presentation started at 10:30 AM with an overview of the proceedings and highlights of the latest technical innovations, as well as economic and regulatory updates in the field of solar energy. The session elaborately presented the activities of the Congress, which coincided with the general assembly of the ‘International Solar Alliance’ involving 116 countries. Both events took place in New Delhi, India, starting from October 31st. The two events began concurrently and shared a second day. The presentation opened the floor for discussions and critical reviews of some of the activities, and introduced the general tone and key speakers to the audience. A coffee break followed, where attendees continued their conversations, reflecting upon the future of solar energy’s contribution both regionally and globally.

The second session started at 11:30 AM with a more focused approach to the research on solar energy in the region. The presentation highlighted the development of research on solar updraft towers in Erbil over the past ten years. It reviewed the achievements but also discussed the difficulties and challenges. The session attracted significant attention from the audience, leading to many questions and discussions related to the core of what was presented and beyond.

Both sessions were presented by Dr. Soorkeu A. Atrooshi and assisted by Mr. Ahmed Abdulhameed and Mr. Ahmed Ameer from the Aviation Engineering Department.
