Tishk International University is proud to announce the successful completion of the 8th National Innovation Competition in Engineering (NICE2023) held on Wednesday, May 18th, 2023. The event, themed “Targeting Smart Sustainable Innovations,” brought together students, supervisors, practitioners, educators, and engineering enthusiasts from nine universities in Kurdistan and Iraq (Tishk International University (Ishik University), Salahaddin University Erbil, University of Mosul, Erbil Polytechnic University, Koya University, Lebanese French University LFU Erbil, Knowledge University, University of Raparin, and Soran University)  who are passionate about smart and sustainable innovations.

NICE2023 aimed to provide a platform for students to showcase their innovative projects, fostering their ability to bring ideas to market. It encouraged the practical application of theoretical knowledge, improving the quality of research and education in Kurdistan while exposing students to engineering skills and concepts. The competition’s ultimate goal was to equip participants with problem-solving skills and leadership qualities, preparing them to thrive as industry professionals. It brought together students, supervisors, and Juries from diverse universities in Kurdistan Region & Iraq, promoting collaboration and healthy competition among them.

In this remarkable edition of NICE, we witnessed an extraordinary shift towards digitalization, revolutionizing the entire event management process. The event was seamlessly organized through a state-of-the-art management system, encompassing registration, review, evaluation, event management, results, and certification. This innovative system, meticulously crafted and developed by Optimal Source specifically for NICE2023, ensured streamlined operations, unparalleled efficiency, and utmost accuracy. The successful implementation of this cutting-edge technology marked a significant milestone in our journey towards embracing digital advancements in engineering events.

Invitations were extended to universities in Kurdistan and Iraq, and online registration were made available for each category. The registration period closed on May 10th, allowing students to finalize their project abstracts and ideas. After the diligent processing of forms by the Head of Departments, acceptance or rejection emails were sent to all participants three days prior to the competition.

NICE2023 garnered significant attention and enthusiasm, attracting an impressive turnout of 3500 attendees. A total of 280 projects were registered for the competition, out of which 207 projects successfully advanced and were presented. Although 73 projects did not proceed further in the competition, their participation showcased their dedication and passion for engineering innovation.

The event was a true testament to the collaborative spirit within the engineering community. There were 519 registered members, including students and professionals from various fields. The competition received invaluable support from a dedicated team of 181 supervisors who guided and mentored the participating students. Additionally, 123 jury members played a crucial role in evaluating the projects and providing insightful feedback, ensuring a fair and comprehensive assessment of the projects

During the event, participating students and jury members were directed to the registration desks at the main building entrance, where they received their badges, lunch cards, program flow, and assigned codes for their stands. The jury members were later invited to the Coordination Hall to collect their evaluation forms and gift packs as a token of appreciation for their valuable contribution.

The project evaluation process commenced at 10:30 AM, with students presenting their projects to the jury members. All participating projects were evaluated based on criteria such as project invention ingenuity, scientific approach, clarity in explaining the project idea, technical skills, and overall effort invested.

The opening ceremony, held at 11:00 AM, featured a warm welcome speech by Asst. Prof. Dr. Idris Hadi Salih, the Head of the Board of Trustees at Tishk International University. He expressed gratitude to all participating students, the Kurdistan Engineering Syndicate, guests, and jury members, emphasizing the university’s ongoing commitment to support the development of the engineering field through sustainable and innovative projects.

Following the opening ceremony, event sponsors were presented with “Thank you” plaques by Asst. Prof. Dr. Idris Hadi, recognizing their generous support and contribution to the event’s success. Dr. Jwan Jalal delivered a captivating presentation, setting the stage for the competition’s main objectives, mission, and vision.
